چکیده

The paper presents two methods for determination of phthalates in polymer materials. The methods compared were gas chromatography combined with the mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC/ECD). The GC/ECD technique was chosen for this comparison, because the ECD detector was one of few capable of detecting phthalates. In both cases the same procedure of sample preparation with ultrasonic extraction was applied. Overall recoveries were 76-100 % with relative of standard deviation (R.S.D.) values in the range 0.6-19 %. The values of limit of detection (LOD) for GC/MS method ranged from 3.46 μg mL to 10.10 μg mL, depending on the determined phthalate, while in case of the GC/ECD method they were in the range from 2.97 μg mL to 4.29 μg mL. The methods were applied for determination of: dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, diisononyl phthalate, diisoocyl phthalate in polymer material. The seventeen kinds of samples were analyzed. Most of the materials selected for the analyses were made from polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS).

Screening of phthalates in polymer materials by pyrolysis GC/MS.

A study on the rapid identification of phthalates in polymer materials has been conducted by employing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry coupled with a pyrolyzer (Py-GC/MS). Since Py-GC/MS does not require any complex solvent-extraction process, a rapid screening of phthalates should be possible. In this study, polymer samples were directly introduced into the pyrolyzer in order to thermally...

Comparative study of thermal desorption and solvent extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis for the quantification of phthalates in polymers.

For the quantitative analysis of phthalates in polymers, a thermal desorption (TD)-GC-MS method was compared with solvent extraction (SE)-GC-MS methods which require the long pretreatment procedures using large amount of harmful organic solvents. Calibration curves of TD-GC-MS showed good linearity (r(2)>0.9997) and low method detection limit (<30mg/kg with 9.0% RSD). Quantification results for...

From Fast to Slow Degradation: Different Strategies to Characterise Polymer Degradation by Chromatographic Techniques

This thesis presents different analytical strategies for the study of the degradation of synthetic polymers. Particular attention was given to the mechanisms involved at the beginning of the polymer breakdown. Three model polymers were used in order to assess different degradation rates. The first polymer studied was a stabilised polyether: Poly(ethylene oxide-propylene oxideethylene oxide) tri...

Field Evaluation of Screening Techniques for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, 2,4-Diphenoxyacetic Acid, and Pentachlorophenol in Air, House Dust, Soil, And Total Diet

The objectives of this work assignment were to evaluate ELISA screening methods and determine whether these methods indicate effectively those microenvironments where high exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) or other semivolatile organic compounds (SVOC) is likely. Four commercially available assay kits for PAH, carcinogenic PAH (C-PAH), 2,4-D, and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were ev...

Trace determination of alpha- and beta-endosulfan and three metabolites in human serum by gas chromatography electron capture detection and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.

Endosufan, alpha and beta, and three conversion products, sulphate, ether and lactone, were simultaneously determined in human serum by means of an analytical procedure which combines extraction with organic solvents, clean-up with H(2)SO(4) and by liquid column chromatography, and detection by gas chromatography (GC) using electron capture detection (ECD) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). ...
